SCIENCE WEEK!

For Science week, we discussed how big ideas lead to new discoveries and inventions, that everything in front of us started off as an idea in someone's imagination.

4th class pupils watched a young girl interview Professor Luke O'Neill who works as an immunologist and has made key discoveries about our immune system.

4th class were set the challenge of creating the "Next Big Idea", for the Willy Wonka Factory...
"Charlie needs your help. He is all out of ideas for his factory and wants you to dream up the big invention! What will it be? Can you design the next big idea for Charlie’s factory?"

We had to create an innovative name, have a purpose for our invention, name the materials needed for our simple machine- cogs, levers, pulleys..., decide on the measurements and scale. Finally pitch their next BIG IDEA to their peers.
We also looked at the curious chemistry of water, where professor John Stephens explores the atoms of water H20 and he demonstrates how acids and bases can dissolve in water through different experiments.

Have you got Maths EYES??

What is Maths Eyes??

Having Maths Eyes changes the view of mathematics as being something everyone just does in school..

With maths eyes children see the maths they do every day so maths becomes real and meaningful. It also builds on students curiosity.

Last Thursday 4th class were using their maths eyes to recognise maths in the playground. They recognised lines, angles, patterns, number, shape and other areas of maths in their environment. They took different pictures on their iPad and are currently posing a maths problem from the picture they captured.

Project Work: Irish Mammals

Irish Mammals

Over the last few weeks 4th class have been researching and presenting their projects on Irish mammals. They researched over 12 different types of Irish mammal. Here are some pictures of our project work. Every student got the chance to present their facts and share their new knowledge with their classmates. Stay posted for a new group project that 4th class have been working on in their history lesson.

Every student researched a different Irish mammal from pygmy shrew, otter, stout, pine marten to hedgehog, house mouse and the Irish hare.

Some of our puppets came to life this week at school. The puppets were excited to share their story with our class.
