Maths Week 10th - 18th of October 2020
Problem Solving Experts + x - =
We did lots of problem solving during maths week.
We looked at real life maths problems, such as which mobile phone network offers the best prepay package and we discussed which was the best value for money.
Next we did numeracy across the curriculum where we explored numeracy in our history lesson on The Celts.
4th class designed a timeline on the Celts by creating and measuring a scale that ranged from 2,000 BC to 1,000 A.D.
Our timeline represented important historical events going on around the world from the arrival of the Celts in Europe, to their arrival in Ireland bringing new skills, iron tools and weapons. Here are the timelines we created in our pods.
S.T.E.M Challenge: Make a simple machine.
In October, 4th class learned all about simple machines. Then they were set with a new S.T.E.M challenge of creating a simple machine that would make a marble travel the furthest distance.
Each group began by planning and organising what materials they needed. Next they moved on to creating a simple machine. Finally after testing their machine 4th class began to adapt their designs. It was great to see such fantastic teamwork!
Who knew we had fantastic engineers and inventors in 4B.

Art Project
We have been extremely lucky to be involved in an art project with two well known artist Alison Mac Cormaic and Ted Turton. 4th class explored Merlin Woods, learning about different leaves and trees growing in our local environment. We sketched the new leaves we found using our new sketch pads.

A Relaxing Afternoon in Merlin Woods Community Garden
Recently in our visual arts lesson, we were busy painting with colours that reminded us of Autumn. Later that week, we visited Merlin Woods Community Garden, where we used our painted backgrounds to sketch the landscape.
We even made some time to do meditation in the community garden. We really enjoyed our relaxing experience.

STEM CHALLENGE
4TH CLASS WERE SET THE CHALLENGE OF:
ELEVATING 2 SCHOOL BOOKS AT LEAST 15CM USING 4 A4 SHEETS OF PAPER.
They did not believe the challenge was possible, however here are our results to show you how we got on.....
The results exceeded their expectations, with most children creating a structure that could carry the weight of more than 2 school books.
After a lot of planning and exploration 4th class discovered that the best design to balance a heavy weight was in fact a cylinder.
